They
say an old blind hog can find an acorn if he roots around long enough. So it was with my friend Tim Cosby. He had spent several days in the woods patiently waiting for a buck deer with a rack to come within range hunting from several different elevated shooting houses and ladder stands. Numerous
does, yearlings and small spikes were seen, but a deer with any kind of
a rack remained hidden.
On the afternoon of Friday
January 25, a buck came to Tim's rattling and grunting. It was a fairly
large bodied deer even though only a six point. The deer should have
been an eight point but had no brow tines.
One shot
from the .54cal. flintlock rifle made for Tim by Mike Brooks ( named
the Wally Nut rifle) at a range of about 50 yds and the deer was down
immediately. Tim had to wait for his grandson Hunter to arrive and
assist in loading the deer in the truck to get it out of the woods. Nice
deer Tim glad an old hog found an acorn.
