Often
referred to as the Type G trade gun(a collector designation not a period term), the Carolina gun was traded to the
Indians in the southeast. While made primarily as trade items to the
Indians, it is reasonable that white traders and early settlers venturing
into the interior of the southeast also carried these smoothbores.
Weighing in at around six pounds the Carolina gun is light and easy to
carry. Gauges varied some, but this 20 gauge Carolina gun built by Mike
Brooks is certainly representative of these trade guns. Since shot or
ball can be used in these guns, they were very versatile. Beech was
often used for stock wood. In this case American walnut was used as
beech is hard to obtain in lengths and widths large to build a trade
gun.
My friend Tim Cosby has wanted a smoothbore that
would have seen use in the southeast for a while. Now thanks to Mike
Brooks he has one. Enjoy.
