While out on a hog hunt with his father , Tab Cosby, Hunter
Cosby heard a call for help. After tearing his way through the briers, he plunged into river water over his head. Hunter was answering a call for
help from his hunting companion. Because he
was swimming with a big boar hog that was fighting his dogs in water
over their head, Justin had just asked for help , and he desperately needed help and a knife. Hunter was
Johnny-on-the-spot with both. First he helped get a struggling dog to
shallow water, then swam back and helped dispatch a very irritated boar
hog.
Not bad for a thirteen year old on his first hog hunt using dogs and a knife for a weapon.
Hunter had already harvested a smaller hog earlier, and while that kill made the
adrenaline flow, it wasn't nearly as exciting as treading water
and dispatching a 250 lb. boar hog. Altogether the group killed eight
hogs in a morning hunt. Way to go.
Wild (feral) hogs are one of the most
destructive animals ever released into the wild. They do countless
millions of dollars in damage to habitat and commercial crops each year.
Eradicating the pests can be almost impossible to do. However, with a
knife and some good dogs Hunter made a start in reducing their numbers.
