Due to the weather and other factors, we had a delayed start to our annual hog hunting. DeWitt and Tim got into the baited areas this morning by means of the buggy. It is too muddy for a heavier vehicle. After deciding which stands to hunt they split up to make the walk in.
DeWitt drew the 10-point stand. Upon reaching the stand he found the hogs were already there. Using his best stalking techniques he made it into the extended range of his 7mm Magnum. Deciding against an offhand shot at that range, he decided to stealthily climb on into the stand to use a rest. Being distracted by the bait the hogs didn't spook.
After picking out a likely looking hog, he decided he could make the shot using a rest at that range. He carefully calculated the wind and bullet drop of his rifle. When he touched off the shot, the hog dropped in its tracks at all of FORTY YARDS!!!! Way to go DeWitt. You can never have too much rifle.
6-5-18 NEWS FLASH!!
A reliable source has informed me that Dewitt has had another opportunity to shoot a hog. However in trying to stretch the 7Mag. beyond its capability he has missed a hog at 65yds. No blood was found, and the hog just ran off. Probably due to being hit by the gravel thrown up by the bullet running out of steam and falling to the ground at that extended range.

UPDATE TO THE UPDATE.
DeWitt got another one. Because of his past history shooting at hogs, there is some discussion about the way the hog was killed. Those who were at the site say it might have been killed by the concussion of the bullet just passing near the hog instead of being hit by the bullet. Or maybe the truck was involved somehow. We'll never know since the hog has been butchered and ground into sausage, thereby destroying any forensic evidence.
Congratulations DeWitt.
SUMMER HUNTING IS OVER FOR DEWITT!!

After
putting in several days hog hunting, Dewitt gave it a try at night
(which is legal in Al) immediate success as the hogs were under the
light when Dewitt and Tim arrived. A quick shot by Dewitt and number
four for the year, a good sized sow was down. She was really fat and
should be some fine eating. Unfortunately this hunt was the last for
Dewitt this year as he has a knee being scoped in the next few days and
will be out of commission for a few weeks. But not to worry his
orthopedic surgeon friend said he's going to be back better than
ever. Maybe he can even squat down behind a hog for a picture next year.
Here's wishing you a safe and productive knee procedure Dewitt. Do what
the Dr. orders and get ready for deer season. It won't be long til
muzzle loader season
