Just got this from Ted. Things are slow this time of year in the frozen North. Looks like a nice little rifle in the Hawken vein.
Specs as follows:
LOP: 13.5"
Weight: 6lbs, 12oz. (according to my feed
scale)
Lock: Davis Goulcher with the plate
not cut for a drum. I changed out the cock to the better
looking Bridger Hawken cock.
Stock: From William Young, Minnesota grown maple,
it's been drying since the 1970's. Nicely figured, stained with Aqua Fortis then
a light rub with Homer Dangler's dark brown stain, then several coats of tung
oil and more to be applied.
Triggers: Long bar Hawken style,
DST. Assembled from parts given to me by William Young.
Barrel: Bauska, .40 caliber, 1-60" twist, 32"
long, 7/8" at the breech tapering to 3/4" at the muzzle, also donated by William
Young.
Breech: L&R hooked slant breech, long tang, two
bolts through to the trigger bar. Started out as the one for a 15/16"
barrel, William milled down what could be done on his milling machine and the
rest I filed.
I put a full buckhorn rear sight and a thick silver
front sight on it. Seems I can see those sights pretty well.
Single barrel key is captured.
The iron mounts and barrel were slow rust browned,
the lock was cold blued and then rubbed back to a more mottled
blue/gray color.
The nose cap I cast from a ~50/50 mix of the pewter
stuff from TOTW and engine bearing babbit material from my uncle's service
station where he sold and serviced Overland cars in the early
1900's.
