When it comes to hunting young Hunter Cosby will hang in there with the
best of them. He really likes to hunt with his Grandfather Tim Cosby, and
hog hunting is one of his favorite things to do. After several days and
nights of fruitless pursuit of feral hogs, Hunter was again hunting with
Papa on July 2. Needlessly to say, it was hot when they began their
vigil about 5:30 in the afternoon. Hours went by, darkness arrived, and with little moon it was really dark. About 8:30 PM the feeder light clicked on and adrenaline flowed, but alas, it was only an opossum traveling through. Five minutes later the light clicked off, and it was was black again. At 9:18 PM Hunter whispered: "I'm about ready to go." Papa suggested they wait until 9:30 to leave.
About ten minutes later
sounds in the dark like a bunch of grunting gremlins rushing toward
them had Hunter nervously whispering: "What is that Papa?" The reply was: "Hogs I
hope or we're in trouble." No light came on so the green hand light (a
gift from Brice) clicked on and illuminated several medium sized hogs
around the feeder with no light. Hunter immediately started to get his scope on
one of the medium sized hogs. When out of the darkness, two big hogs
rushed in to run the others off their food. All was confusion under the
tripod feeder. Hunter sent a round down range that resulted in a brief
loss of vision until the powder residue and muzzle flash subsided.
Then to their dismay they saw the feeder on its side. First thing
Hunter said as he saw the feeder on its side with the legs in the air
was " Papa I think I shot the feeder". Then in a more subdued voice said
"I really think I must have shot the feeder leg"
Several
minutes went by before the pair reached the feeder and searched the
trampled ground for sign. With a great deal of relief in his voice
Hunter said "There is no sign I hit the feeder leg, and here's blood on one of its legs". In the confusion after the shot the fatally wounded hog had run into the feeder. After a short blood trail, Hunter found his quarry a really
nice 175 lb. boar hog. From high to low and back to high in just a
matter of minutes. Hunter even helped clean the hog with the Joe Schell
knife he won last deer season. Good going Hunter.
